Jan 26, As good as it was ever going to get, and that's seriously saying something. Look, I'll admit that I'm under the sentimental influence, but the thing is I've been back to this movie many times, and not that long ago.
It still has that special something for me, and I certainly don't consider it a guilty pleasure. It's very much a labour of love.

The soundtrack however, is impressive and fits the hip-hop style of the '90s. For what it is, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a campy ramp that's a bit of fun.

But if you are one of the handful of people who remembers the original TMNT comic book and how dark it was, you will probably think more of the name.
This live-action version of the Teenaged Turtles reaches back into its comic book origins and sacrifices the kiddie stuff in favor of a darker, more brooding film.
This is the key to this movie's greatness. It shows the Turtles how they were meant to be shown. The movie is still fun, though, supplying the viewer with all the early 90's teenager slang and ass-kicking that you can squeeze onto celuloid.
The only problem is that the whole Ninja Turtles franchise has come with a love it or hate it tag attached to it, often times giving it a bad rap that it really doesn't deserve.
The film is no Blade Runner or Spiderman by any means, but it's still a great little piece of cinema that you can just sit down with a bowl of popcorn or maybe a pizza and enjoy without much thought.
Sadly, this is as good as the series gets not that this movie could get much better. TMNT 2 lacks the gritty edge that makes this movie good having Vanilla Ice on the soundtrack doesn't help much either and TMNT 3 is obviously aimed directly for the little ones.

Please try again later. Verified Purchase. I'd just like to point out that I adore this film. It runs circles around any of the proceeding movies, using the foreboding tones and ideals of its comic origins, whilst balancing the aesthetics and writing to carter to its target audience: children.
The physical props and great acting have made this 's classic stand the test of time, and it honestly hasn't aged a day. To sum up; if you haven't watched it I urge you to do so immediately.
But this review isn't about the praises of the film itself, but on the Blu-Ray transfer. I own an old DVD copy of this film and it retains everything that is fantastic about it.
However, the Blu-Ray version of this movie sacrifices the dark gritty tone for a brighter contrast and spit-polish on the picture, effectively removing a lot of the visual appeal; unearthing costume lines, etc the viewer isn't meant to see.
The best analogy to give would be what happened to The Justice League: a movie that was designed to be visually dark, but when you up the contrast it reveals all the magicians tricks.
The bottom line being, save your money on this and hunt down a DVD copy of the film as it's still superior to this.
Great classic film, no matter how many times I watch it, I still enjoy it. Having it on Blu-ray is great, however with the increased picture clarity it is easier to see some of the little details that should not be seen.
However it is still a great film and by far the best Turtles movie ever made. One person found this helpful. The original and in my opinion the best version of the butt kicking turtles.
Yes it looks a bit dated compared to films nowadays, yes they are guys in costumes but the film still looks good to me and gives a dose of childhood nostalgia.
Video and audio quality are an improvement on the DVD release but sadly and surprise with the remakes and its original box office there are no extras apart from a trailer.
Behind the scenes or vintage cast interviews would have been a welcomed addition. Hence the four stars. I love this film. I loved it as a kid and love it more as an adult.
Kudos for making it dark and gritty. Still stands up today even next to the cgi films Which I also kind of like as well.
