May 18, A smart take on the vampire lore genre, Captain Kronos doesn't give the attention to the said vampires but onto the bigger than life protagonist with a nicely engaging story and a fair share amount of memorable moments.
It also features a lot of disposable scenes, the setting is pretty boring and uninspired but it still manages to complete the b-sleaze aesthetic it carries nicely enough.
Francisco G Super Reviewer. Apr 14, Successful entry in the Hammer horror vault due to very artful direction by Brian Clemens who also wrote the intelligent script.
Kronos Horst Janson , he of the too-tight trousers and too-short tunic, arrives in a village where young women are found in the forest with withered faces, drained of life.
Is this the work of a new species of vampire? Hunchbacked professor Grost John Cater and wild beauty Carla Caroline Munro accompany Kronos as he roots out this menace in the 18th century.
There are many violent acts but interestingly very little is shown onscreen, apart from a fairly competently staged sword duel.
Instead we see the aftermath - blood dripping down a lampshade or a basket of broken eggs carried by a victim - which doesn't give much of a visceral thrill but I appreciated its unusual cerebral style.
I also liked how the identity of the vampire s are not who you might suspect at first, so the surprise ending was genuinely a surprise! Doctor S Super Reviewer.
Sep 05, A swashbuckling vampire tale, I love it. This movie is very cool, it's about a vampire hunter back in the old days, and he travels to this town to slay the vampires.
I highly recommend this Hammer horror movie. Aj V Super Reviewer. Jul 28, So it takes place in the times of the swashbuckle, you have your one dimensional 2 at most hero, his smart as hell sidekick, who together comprise of a great vampire hunting team.
The sidekick knows everything there is to know about vampire, and is intelligent as hell while Kronos, our hero, is like the gunslinger of fencing swords Well that's actually where this film gets interesting as it shares so many attributes with the Italian western or the samurai film.
Not only that but it has a healthy dose of Italian and French exploitation appeal, and is produced by a British studio Hammer, to be exact.

Oct 19, Justin rated it really liked it. A fun story. Sep 23, Devin rated it really liked it. I liked the articles about making the movie at the end though!
Jul 02, Martijn Van rated it liked it. Fun and pulpy vampire story. Would be nice if there be more Hammer Comics. Captain Kronos is a fun read, based on the Hammer film character Kronos and his helpers take on vampires.
Dec 05, Dennis Lynch rated it really liked it. The name suggests there's more to it, even, but mostly, it's the detailed world the story creates.
It turns out it was written by the director and planned to be a series, but never came to fruition. The details like the explanation that there are many kinds of vampire, or the use of strange forms of folklore to suss out vampires, or the history hinted at for Kronos that is never fully explained, these all craft a world, not just a straight forward story.
It made it instantly intriguing. I really liked that the vampires sucked the youth out of their victims, made for some creepy corpses.
It felt like it wanted to break out into more of a comedy but the very solid atmosphere stopped it from tipping. John Carson looks a lot like Tom Waits.
I kept singing his dialogue in a Tom Waitsian voice to the annoyance and despair of my daughter. This is not a great movie, a little too lite for my tastes.
But it has charm. It has an easy Sunday viewing type thing going on. A beautiful to look at vampire swashbuckler from the latter stages of Hammer's reign, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is a film full of potential; indeed Brian Clemens, the man behind it who was also creator of The Avengers had the idea for a series of Kronos films, supplanting him and his loyal hunchbacked aide Prof Grost anywhere in time, anywhere in the world and against any supernatural staple villain.
Unfortunately, despite the great concept, the film isn't as engaging or well paced as it ought to be. What should be a rollicking enough romp to make 90 minutes feel little more than half an hour turns out to be a little weak and ineffectual, despite the cast's best intentions, the….
Their methods and their motive for attack can vary in a hundred different ways. And there, in a nutshell you have the idea behind Captain Kronos, which comes courtesy of the men who brought you The Avengers , Albert Fennell and Brian Clemens.
A small, but effective twist on the nature of the vampire, in this case the creature is not draining their victims of blood, but of their youth, changing them from beautiful young women to withered old crones, and dead ones at that.
Kronos Horst Janson himself, is also a new take on the vampire hunter, usually, but not exclusively….
Lightsome maidens, flowers in full bloom, are plucked before their time, reduced to bedraggled bags of bones.
Our hero is a hard-edged holy warrior, hunky and horny this is a Hammer film after all yet devoutly ascetic. Necromantic dreams trouble the endless sleep of death.
Extremely charming Hammer horror that has the audacity to play around with the genre a bit, with different kind of vampires that walk around in sunlight, sucking the life out of people.
In fact, almost the entire movie is set during daytime which makes for an odd but fun experience. The main problem with the movie is that it is so obvious that they wanted to set up a series of movies here a great cast, it could have been awesome that you never get any sense of danger for any of the leads and in the end we are watching what feels slightly like a tv-pilot.
It's too bad, I would have watched a series of movies with these people. Especially Caroline Munro, she's so adorably cute that you just want to gobble her up.
At the same time Hammer were desperately searching for a new spin on their traditional vampire tales, with Sir Christopher of Lee getting continually grumpy and twitchy feet about reprising the role, along came this hopeful franchise starter to take things in a very different direction Sure, the gothic setting remained, but almost everything else was new: firstly, we got an odd if not unenjoyable genre mix of gothic vampire flick, heroic swashbuckler and murder mystery.
Our very wooden lead rolls into town, with his hunchbacked companion who, like the rest of the film is an interesting mix of part Igor, part Van Helsing , picks up Caroline Munro because who wouldn't?
Captain Kronos is pretty much the old-timey swashbuckler version of Blade : They both have a sword, a fancy coat and a badass old sidekick who builds their weapons.
Apparently my vampire knowledge wouldn't kill a flea's codpiece either, because in this movie vampires walk in the day, drain the youth and not blood from their victims and inadvertently resurrect frogs.
Despite the silliness of all of this within the mythos of vampires, I still thoroughly enjoyed this film. The pacing is way too slow, and this was clearly setting up a whole series, but it was beautifully shot with good acting and an interesting story.
The beauty of the scenery and sets mixed with some great characters and cheesiness made this a huge win for me. It really is too bad that "Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter: is such a slog to sit through.
The handsomely designed and shot costume horror from Hammer has some interesting ideas, plot points, and seems to want to transcend the genre, but is simply too slowly paced to be effective.
