In the beginning of the pilot the Trio were still human. They share a day at sea, then end up out of gas. They paddle to Maiko Island. While on the island they get stuck in an enchanted cave with a sea pool.
They swim out through the pool, and are then rescued by the coastguard. The next day they learn what the pool's magic had done to them.
From then on whenever they get wet, salt or fresh water, they transform into Mermaids. Their tails are an elegant golden color. Their clothes disappear when they change and reappear when they change back.
Also they find that, despite the fish-like appearance of their tails, they can't breath underwater - only hold their breath a long time.
These Teen Mermaids are played by actual teenagers. They're not the spoiled, self-centered, personalities that are so common for teen characters.
As human girls they're lovable and powerful - at times stronger than adults, at others still quite innocent. As mermaids they are heroines. They protect each other, those they love, and the ocean near their homes.
They learn quickly how powerful they've become, and refuse to allow anyone to exploit that power. The Trio returns to Maiko Island in many episodes.
The tropical scenery is beautiful, above and below water. The scenes underwater have reefs filled with dolphins, various fish, sharks and much more.
The beaches and tropical scenery on Maiko Island are magnificent. This is a beautiful series. Gave it to my Niece who initially did not open it for few weeks as she had never heard of it.
But once she opened it to check it out, she was addicted. For Christmas her parents got her the other seasons. Now she wants to visit Australia and become a mermaid!
I love mermaids and this is a cute story. Each develops a different power over water. Problem is, they can't get wet otherwise they turn.
Living in a sea town, having to do dishes, attending pool parties and one working in a water park prove challenging to these young ladies who must keep their secret lest they become lab "rats".
But sometimes they come dangerously close to being discovered. Out of necessity, they entrust their secret to only one friend, a brain who helps them whenever they need it.

Three ordinary teenage girls discover a moon pool on Mako Island that turns them into extraordinary mermaids with special powers over water on the night of a full moon.
They must never look in the moon's eye or there will be side effects for each of them. One of my friends recommended this show to me, and once I saw the first episode, I didn't really know what to think.
The story starts off with Cleo being the main focus, and jumping right into her life, with her friends, enemies and family.
Who are the people she is talking to? The story starts off slow, and if you are only planning on seeing the first episode, steer away right now.
The characters' backgrounds and personalities are built up over the first few episodes, along with how they can cope with what is happening to them, but you have to stick with it or it won't make any sense.
Cleo is talking to this girl who is swimming, Emma. Emma is an important character int he story, as without her I am sure Cleo and Rikki would have been goners from the start.
So, we meet Rikki, who stole something off someone's boat Note to self : watch my wallet around her , and valiantly jumps into the boat she stole the item from, which Cleo is now in.
Now, my first impression of Rikki: Loud mouthed and cheeky. It turns out I wasn't that far off, but, in the end, it makes the show all the better.
The 3 girls' personalities even out over the episodes. And well, we have the main characters: Emma, the cautious one, Rikki, the one in-your-face one, and Cleo, the.
I am not really sure how to describe her. Off the top of my head I would say 'annoying', but I think there are depths to her personality that I keep overlooking.
Then there is Lewis. Having known Cleo for who knows how long, he is seen often, as more of a comic relief character who thinks he is a scientist, and is usually, if not asking the girls for hair samples, trying to figure out what is up with them.
All in all, I would say this is a great, fun show. The plot is, in fact, thicker than I would have thought possible from watching the first episode So stick to it!
It has a great assortment of characters though, I do think a few skip between in and out of character , and plot twists when you least expect it or think nothing else can go wrong for the three.

When Evie comes down with a fever that causes the temperature in the room to soar, Carly suspects that her friend is keeping a secret from her.
When Erik learns that the trident stone is the missing element needed to activate the merman chamber, Zac gives it to the mermaids for safekeeping.
The chamber's true purpose is revealed: to drain the magic from all mermaids. Zac risks his life to shut it down and restore the mermaids' magic.
