It made me learn more about people who are living in a heartless society, coping with near death experiences and split second discisons to act.
America will always be plauged with race, class, gender and other issues Capatalism at it's finest but films like these is what's needed because it's a wake up call for the better.
Director Lawrence Kasdan's Grand Canyon is a gathering of random events, uniting the film's wildly divergent protagonists.
Driving home from an LA Lakers game, Mack Kevin Kline , an immigration attorney, is stranded in an unsavory part of town when his car breaks down.
He is rescued from a gang of hoods by Simon Danny Glover , an African-American tow truck driver, inaugurating a friendship between these two men.
Mack offers to repay Simon's kindness by helping his sister Tina Lifford find an apartment in a better neighborhood, and by arranging a blind date between Simon and Jane Alfre Woodard , a friend of Mack's secretary Dee Mary Louise Parker.
Woven into this fabric are the tribulations of Mack's best friend, a pompous exploitation movie producer Steve Martin , who is later wounded in a robbery similar to the one threatening Mack at the beginning of the film; of Mack's wife Claire Mary McDonnell , who adopts an abandoned baby, and disenfranchised son Roberto Jeremy Sisto ; and of Simon's nephew Patrick Malone , who is contemplating joining a street gang.

The plot revolves around six characters, each of them having trouble to get on with their daily lives, for several different reasons. As these lives serendipitously criss-cross each other, they're convinced eventually that there's hope at the end of the tunnel.

It's pretty obvious that this was made to be an edgy race film and it almost has no purpose aside from that. A lot, if not all, of the characters are one-noted.
It's good for a casual viewing in your high school classroom, but it is so unrealistic and negligent that it can't be taken seriously.

If this movie were made today, her character would undoubtedly be played by Jennifer Connelly. Danny delivers heartbreaking lines about how life has turned out far more complicated than it should be, and that he should be able to peacefully work in his garage without asking a kid with a gun not to shoot him.
Mary makes the audience wonder about the power of the universe, suggesting to her husband that his new friend might last the rest of his life.

One person found this helpful. This movie keeps making me come back to it. It's a simple, unpretentious, film which deals with a profound question: is life a string of unrelated chaotic events or is everything we encounter all a part of a bigger picture?
Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that the story is one about inintended epiphanies revealing the latter perspective. In the process, the film makes one think about life and feel satisfied from doing so.
Grand Canyon is one of those movies that was not appreciated at first ,but years later after seeing in through fresh Older eyes I'm amazed at how relevant it is now.
Instead of going through what it is about, simply I just want to say how it is a preclude to movies like Crash and The TV Series Touch. These are about chance encounters with people that have a ripple affect in ways we cannot predict.
The ensemble gels well together, but it is Danny Glover's and Kevin Kline's Characters that steer this boat and without it being over the top mushy, it simply gives us a view of how maybe we take chance encounters for granted.
I watched this today and was blown away, especially the scene in the Diner when Kevin Kline takes Danny Glover to Breakfast is so well done.
If you like movies that focus on characters, then get this. I have seen this movie numerous times, and it's quirky charm remains intact.
Great acting by a stellar cast, unique yet relevant plot-lines, and absolutely brilliant photography.
This is a very good movie that came out at the right time with the right actors well done!!! The characters are people you'd want to have a beer with individually and collectively.
Grand Canyon shows how people can positively impact one and other with minimal effort. It shows how one good deed can rapidly compound to change a life and how people in different walks of life need each other.
The multiple story lines build on each other and tell a series of stories that provide insight. The helicopters that roam LA skies at night are explained.

Successful middle-aged lawyer, Kline. Tries to beat the traffic on his way home from a Lakers game. In doing so, he winds up on the wrong side of town, at the wrong time of night and his car has just died on him!
And it's at this point part of a local gang shows up!! Just as he thinks he might never make it off the street, never mind get safely home!
Garage mechanic Simon beautifully understated performance from Danny Glover shows up and somehow manages to talk the gang out of committing serious harm to either himself or kline.
