Although found guilty and sentenced to death, Violette impressed her nun-jailors by embracing religion, and in , the Vichy government turned her loose to marry a prison accountant, with whom she later opened a truck stop and faded into bourgeois respectability, getting a full and extraordinary pardon in and dying in not living to see a Chabrol thriller based on the case filmed.
Maza is extraordinarily good at reconstructing the fragile world of social climbers and French class hierarchy, drawing on the more documented life of Simone Beauvoir and Coco Chanel, as well as court cases, neighborhood gossip and the voluminous trial record.
Jun 20, Wanda rated it it was ok. The story of an 18 year old woman who murders her father and tries to murder her mother by poisoning them. She alleged that her father was sexually abusing her.
But, and this is a big but, she was also a chronic liar. I suspect that she was a sociopath who wanted her parents out of her way so that she could enjoy her life without interference.
Despite Maza's repeatedly telling us how beautiful Violette was, in reality she was rather homely, and I suspect that she created a fictional world of lie The story of an 18 year old woman who murders her father and tries to murder her mother by poisoning them.
Despite Maza's repeatedly telling us how beautiful Violette was, in reality she was rather homely, and I suspect that she created a fictional world of lies about herself and her family as compensation for her plain looks.
Ditto for her prostitution. A big argument against her sexual abuse was the fact that she contracted syphylis. This was quite a scandalous affair in the France of the s, but I found it a bit dry, although I suspect that the scholarship was as good as one could hope for when so little was established as to whether Violette was guilty or innocent.
I think it was more of a sociological exploration of class differences in the France of the early 20th century using the Noziere as an example of class differences and attitudes.
This book is an academic one and should be approached as such, but seems to be marketed more as true crime than an academic argument.
I was hoping for a livlier book. Jan 12, Caroline rated it liked it Shelves: nonfiction , anton-book-group.
Interesting use of an extremely high-profile case in s Paris to explore social mobility and family life between the wars. The emergence of a large lower middle class population with aspirations for their children, amidst the continuing political and religious factions of earlier times, is the background for a case that exemplifies the rise of the faits divers, stories that now fill the tabloids.
The author presents a reasonably balanced story, managing the gradual revelations of complicating Interesting use of an extremely high-profile case in s Paris to explore social mobility and family life between the wars.
The author presents a reasonably balanced story, managing the gradual revelations of complicating layers in the story well.
In the end one comes down in favor of believing the version of her life that would possibly exonerate her but it doesn't come forced upon the reader.
Instead, events illustrate what a France must have been like for women, and those emerging from poverty.
It also is good on the prevalence in the press of biases toward peasants, the poor, homosexuals, etc that apparently were printed without concern for journalistic impartiality.
One chapter focuses in the interest the surrealists, led by Breton, took in the case. But the book needed a much stronger editor to cut out the repetition and keep things moving at a brisker pace.
In , eighteen year old, Violette Noziere murdered her father and almost murdered her mother by slipping them poison. She was the Lizzy Borden of her time in Paris and her crime heralded the beginning of what we now call "tabloid journalism".
This is not your typical crime drama. Much of this book reads like a sociology textbook carefully examining the new emerging class system in France the rise of a middle class , the role of women in society, the evolution of journalism and the attitudes In , eighteen year old, Violette Noziere murdered her father and almost murdered her mother by slipping them poison.
Much of this book reads like a sociology textbook carefully examining the new emerging class system in France the rise of a middle class , the role of women in society, the evolution of journalism and the attitudes of the french criminal justice system at the time.
If these subjects interest you, you would enjoy this book. Not a typical "beach read" by any means.
I found it interesting and I'm glad I read it but it's not for everyone. Aug 03, Deborah rated it it was ok. I found the book to be confusing with its many sidetracks into subject areas that were not clearly explained.
Often times , things were mentioned in a chapter by name, but not clearly explained until the following chapter.
I think the story connection to the Surrealists could have been better developed, instead different crime cases were dragged into the story.
Too many side stories with nothing being firmly explained or developed. Too bad, I felt the author was knowledgable.
Jul 13, Cathy rated it it was ok. I guess I was more interested in the true crime aspects of this than the sociology of Paris in the 's.
The author tried to tie them up together but I felt there was too much of the history and I was really more interested in Violette.
Nov 26, Shelly rated it it was ok Shelves: I'm giving it two stars because I learned a lot about French and specifically Parisian history during the 30's and 40's and the story of Violette is very interesting.
However, this was tedious to read. Not really a story as much as a well-researched history of "the affair". Maza uses the story of a murder in s Paris to examine daily life of a working class unaffected by the Wars or the Depression.
A lot of the themes reflect sensationalism of crimes today: gender expectations, incest, social norms Feb 26, Ann rated it liked it Shelves: classes.
In general, I liked the book. However, some of the side stories on Beauvoir or the Surrealists don't seem to add much to the narrative, yet take up much space in the argument.
Could have used with some tighter editing in my opinion. Dec 10, Cynthia Kane rated it really liked it. Very academic study on this famous case - I appreciated it for dropping us into a time and place, helping any reader understand that it's vital to also understand a period where something like this and it's famous trial happen.

Oct 08, In return, she contracts syphilis from a medical student Fabrice Luchini. However, her ineffectual parents still think of her as the little girl she once was, not that far in the past.
But people change, children very rapidly which includes Violette who is now standing on the cusp of adulthood.
This is a state of transition enunciated by having an adult actress in the title role which also ensures that nobody gets arrested.
