When Erik's elder brother starts to date Ewa, who is engaged to an international handball player and all-round bruiser, the stage is set for a confrontation, which Erik and his friend refer to as The Incident.
I really liked this book. It's a coming of age story set in the sixties, which focuses on the two teenaged boys, Erik and Edmund, who spent a summer in a cottage in Sweden, because both their mothers are sick, albeit from different illnesses.
Then something horrible happens that changed everything, and Erik's summer is set in relation to what happened before and after that horrible thing.
A part of the summer are also Erik's brother, the boys substitute teacher and the girl in the grocery store. There was a certain warmth to the story that I liked, even though things ended as they did.

Well, two of the four are fourteen year old boys sent to the lake house for the Summer because of the absence of both of their mothers. Their fathers work together and decide this is the answer for their sons for the Summer.

The first few weeks are idyllic with boating, swimming and riding their bikes around the lake but then things change. They sneak into a local fair and while there they witness an incident, not the incident, which is the first hint of what is to come.
I was still guessing right to the end of the book. What was I guessing, why whodunnit of course. Did I not tell you the book sounded mysterious, well it is and I completely enjoyed it.
This is a very well written story driven book that seems so innocuous at first and then suddenly pulls you into a mystery.

In the aftermath their time at the lake ends, they return home, and over time they drift apart, eventually coming back together more than 20 years later with questions still unanswered about what happened that summer and who may have been responsible for it.
It is so much more complex a story, in so many ways, moving quietly toward the answers that all of those involved in that summer need, and through changes in their lives which are surprising or inevitable.

I enjoyed the narrator's voice which allowed us an almost unimpeded view of a few weeks in the summer of channeled through the same boy about 35 years later.
